I am asking people in Dudley to support my campaign for the Union Flag to be flown daily on all public buildings in the United Kingdom as a demonstration of national
confidence and pride.
I’ve often thought it was funny that our public buildings didn’t have the flag of our country flying proudly. Other countries fly their national flags everywhere – at Town
Halls, schools, and government buildings. They fly their flags all over the place.
And they are all very comfortable with their flag as a symbol of their nation and want it to be flown. They find it strange when they discover we don’t - because they
understand their flags to be a sign of togetherness with their fellow citizens.
I believe we live in the greatest country on earth and that the Union Jack is a great symbol of the great British values of freedom, tolerance, democracy and fairness - the
values that British people have fought for so many times.
For me our national flag is a symbol of inclusion. Extremists have tried to make our flag a symbol of division, but I believe it is a source of national pride and a symbol
of national unity showing how the British people stand for the values of democracy, liberty for all, responsibility by all and fairness to all. And I believe it is a flag that every citizen
of our country can fly with pride, whatever their own backgrounds and heritage.
I have been campaigning for our flag to be flown every day on public buildings and have called on Dudley Council to fly our flag all year round. So far, they have refused
to do that. I will keep up the pressure on the council, and your support for my campaign will help me.
The Government has also announced a consultation about relaxing the guidelines on flying our flag on national government buildings. I would like to be able to let them know
how much support there is here in Dudley to allow and encourage more buildings to fly our flag.
That is why I would be grateful if you could add your name to my petition and ask your family members, friends and neighbours to do the same.
